DOCTOR DOO – Keeping Your Battery Charged

Many of you have already stored your Sea-Doo for the winter, or are in the process of storing your Sea-Doo.  A very important aspect of winterization is battery maintenance.  Proper storage techniques can be make the difference between a dead battery or a battery that roars to life after a long winter’s slumber.

Reasons for keeping a constant charge

- It keeps the battery from being depleted from non-use.

- Help maintain battery life

- Battery is ready when you go to de-winterize your Sea-Doo watercraft.

Tools needed

-       Phillips head screwdriver, Flat head screw driver or 10mm nut driver

-       Trickle Charger (Sea-Doo carries the Yuasa smart shot automatic battery charger, part # 529035773. See your local dealer for details)

Important Note

-       Never charge or boost battery while installed in the watercraft

-       Always charge a battery in a well vented room

-       Always make sure trickle charger or battery charger is unplugged before connecting charger cables or before removing charger cables.

Instructions

1.  Locate the battery in your Sea-Doo watercraft.

2.  Next take a look at the bolts that secure your battery cables to the battery and determine what tool must be used to remove the cables.

3.  Be sure to remove the negative (-) black cable first and make sure it does not come in contact with the battery or any other grounding component (such as any exposed hardware) during the next steps.

4.  Remove the positive (+) red cable from the battery.

5.  Disconnect the vent hose from battery.

6.  Install a piece of hose (same type as vent hose) with a cap or a small hose pincher onto the battery to prevent electrolyte spillage when removing the battery.

7.  Remove any straps or brackets that may be securing the battery into the battery tray.

8.  Remove the battery and place it on a workbench or something comparable. Be sure to place it out of the reach of children.

9.  Make sure your trickle charger is unplugged and then connect the charger to the battery, making sure the positive (+) red cable is hooked up to the positive end on the battery and the negative (-) black cable is hooked up to the negative end of the battery.

10.  Plug in the charger to a wall socket and you are ready to stay charged!

Additional instructions – If the battery terminals seem to have corrosion or rust of any sort, use a wire brush to remove before connecting to the charger.

The best way to maintain proper battery life is to keep a constant charge, so keep up on your battery maintenance to maintain that showroom like quality all year round.

X-TEAM TUESDAY: Honorary X-Team Rider — The Big Guy, Chris Kringle

BIO

NAME: Chris Kringle

SPORT: Reindeer Racing, Snow Cross, Curling, Wake Sports

AGE: Timeless

PORT: North Pole

FAMILY: Married

Chris Kringle is not known for his prowess on the water but he does have wake skills worthy of being an honorary X-TEAM rider.  His balance and speed are immeasurable yet fitness is never a concern.  His XXXXL PFD holds in that belly of jelly.  While he makes his rounds aboard a Sea-Doo GTI SE 155, red of course, he always makes time to read each and every letter from his fans from around the world.

Most people don’t know much about the big man other than he works diligently all year and leads an army of small-in-stature craftsmen. He is a master of logistics and delivers fun to all that are good. His transportation of choice is out-of-this-world but does perform better in cooler climates. This is where Sea-Doo watercraft have come to his rescue during the past 25 years.

Kringle is able to provide his delivery crew a few milliseconds of rest time in the water bound areas, making waterfront deliveries via dockside delivery. As of late his delivery time has become substantially more efficient with the innovation of BRP’s Intelligent Brake and Reverse (iBR). The new technology provides him greater control to quickly and quietly pull up to docks and when managing his bag of gifts, starting in Neutral allows him to leave as quiet as a mouse.

Lets get to know Chris Kringle a bit better through his own words. .  .

OnBoard - Chris, where did you grow up and how was your competitive spirit developed?

Kringle – I grew up in a magical part of the world few have ever seen. It isn’t the easiest place to get to, but we do have a fleet of Ski-Doo Snowmobiles for the work force and I utilize my custom sleigh and trusty reindeer. When I venture to the tropics we have Sea-Doo watercraft at various ports around the world. As far as competition, our operation is continually challenged and we must cover more area and visit more homes. We push ourselves to be better and more efficient. That new Sea-Doo ECO Mode helps out too as we can go longer without stopping.

OnBoard – What do you do away from the water to stay on the water? What’s your profession?

Kringle – We spend most of our time at the production facility away from the water but a handful of times a year we visit our watersports R&D facility at a secret spot in the Caribbean. On the WAKE side we work with the talents of the NIKE wake team of Nick Taylor, Ben Horan, Andrew Pastura, and Kevin Henshaw. On the performance side, we work with racers James Bushell, Troy Snyder, Brian Baldwin, Claude Clayton, Erminio Iantosca, James Mastersons, Jared Moore, and Chris MacClugage. They are all really good, ho ho ho.

OnBoard – Chris, How were you introduced to watersports?

Kringle – In our business we travel over all areas of this beautiful world. My parents taught me to appreciate the sea and waterways of the world and taught me how important these waterways are to everything living and that Sea-Doo watercraft are the best vehicles to be connected to that life. Sea-Doo watercraft are the ultimate vehicles to be connected with water top nature.

OnBoard – Since you began travelling what are some of your accolades?

Kringle – Lets just say I have been in the double diamond skymiles club every year for the past ….. many years, and have done so all in one night.

OnBoard – Chris, Where is your favorite PWC riding location?
Kringle – Ho ho ho, golly, there are so many, Bora Bora, Queensland, Traverse City, South Beach, Lake Powell, Marseille, Van Ryneveld, Perth, so so many.

OnBoard – What is it about PWC riding that keeps you coming back?
Kringle – Sea-Doo watercraft offer the perfect melding of function and fashion. Sea-Doo watercraft have a look that sets them apart and while holding onto the reins the handling is so instinctual, and they are built to last over 10 years, while operating in the most harsh conditions of any motorized vehicle.

OnBoard – How was your experience doing a quick photo shoot with the Sea-Doo team in Florida?

Kringle -  If there was one word to describe the Sea-Doo crew it would be Passion. I have the utmost respect for people who follow their dreams and live for what they do. That was very enjoyable. It was difficult to get an extra hour this time of year but they were very professional and did their job with passion.  They share many of the same qualities of our organization. They bring people fun and happiness. If you love what you do it isn’t work and that is how that team thinks.

BRP thanks Chris Kringle for his time and dedication to the pursuit of spreading joy around the world.  You can look at the details of his favorite water sleigh and follow Kringle’s upcoming adventure on his trip tracker.

Dr. Doo is back and offers his advice on how to change out your Sea-Doo grips.

Reasons for changing:

-After a long season or two, the harsh outdoor elements start to harden the stock rubber Sea-Doo grip and they become a bit slick.

- Some riders tend to wear down the grips after a long season or two.

-Simple project to get that new look back to your aging watercraft.

Tools needed:

-       Small flat head screw driver

2. Remove 10mm bolt

4.   Slide new grip on with the flare of the grip facing forward. No glue is needed with Sea-Doo grips as they have a locking system.

5.  Clean the bolt that you remove of its original yellow thread locker with a wire brush, be sure to remove all of the yellow thread locker as you will be applying blue Loctite brand in its place.

6.  Apply blue Loctite on the first five threads

7.  Re insert the bolt.

8.  Insert rubber end plug to the grip.

In the end this not only helps maintain that Showroom look and feel, but also gives you that added grip you once had when you took your Sea-Doo out for its first ride.

X-TEAM TUESDAY: Kings Cup–World Cup Grand Prix Recap

Kings Cup Pro Run About Open Grand Prix Winners, from Left to Right: (4) Jared Moore, (2) James Bushell, (1) Veerapong Maneechom, (3) Chaowalit Kuajaroon, (5) Aero Aswar

Sea-Doo X-TEAM riders continue to dominate personal watercraft racing with a record setting effort at the recent 2012 PWC KING’S CUP GRAND PRIX in Pattaya City Thailand.  The King’s Cup is the last major PWC race of the year, as the top riders from around the world close out their competitive year following October’s IJSBA World Championship. For the past eight years many of the top riders have converged at the Kings Cup to battle for one last chance at a title during the calendar year.

In the premier Pro Runabout Open class Veerapong Maneechom (Thailand), James Bushell (United Kingdom) and Chaowalit Kuajaroon (Thailand) showed the world once again that it takes the all-new Sea-Doo RXP-X 260 to claim a podium spot this year. James Bushell after winning runabout world titles in both Pro Open and GP tied overall winner Maneechom in points at the end of the weekend, but it came down to a tiebreaker the final moto. Maneechom separated himself from the pack during his final moto victory, and the event ended with Maneechom standing on the winners spot at this years King Cup. Not only did Sea-Doo riders fill the podium, Sea-Doo X-TEAM riders in the Pro Runabout Open class took spots one through seven, and eight of the top ten racers were riding Sea-Doo RXP-X watercraft.

After the dominating performances at the IJSBA World Finals the X-TEAM momentum continues. The fastest riders in the world are choosing to ride Sea-Doo watercraft. These numbers continue to grow since the Sea-Doo RXP-X has arrived on the market; lets take a look…

-       Of the 134 racers in the runabout category at the Kings Cup, 103 of them were riding Sea-Doo watercraft, an impressive 77%.

-       There were 27 podium spots available, 23 of them were claimed by a Sea-Doo.

-       Nine class championships were available, eight of those were won by a racer on a Sea-Doo watercraft.

Pro Am Runabout stock class shared a familiar theme with the Pro Runabout Open class. Once again Sea-Doo took the top three positions with Terra Settura from Thailand taking the top honors. Settura won two of the four motos. Runner up Omude Salee from Cambodia put up a challenge by also winning two motos, but Settura’s combined moto scores bested Salee’s for the 2012 title. Rounding out the podium was Thanaphan Phungjunan from Thailand.

As race season comes to an end and plans are made for 2013, one can’t help but wonder how many racers will be aboard Sea-Doo watercraft next season. Congratulations to all of the new Kings Cup Champions and to all racers who chose Sea-Doo as their watercraft of choice at this years PWC Kings Cup – World Cup Grand Prix

DID YOU KNOW? Sea-Doo has Three Hull Designs, Offering Something for Every Rider

Sea-Doo watercraft provide the ultimate in value and performance and we offer you multiple choices in watercraft design and handling characteristics. One of the primary decisions that you need to make when researching watercraft styles is the type of rider that you are—this will help you determine the segment and style of watercraft that will be ideal for you.

One of the most important decisions is hull design.  Sea-Doo has three different hull styles and each offer riders different ride characteristics.

Are you looking for something playful and nimble that rides on top of the waves or are you looking for a tight turning, aggressive hull that enables you to corner harder and faster and cuts right through the waves?  We offer three hull styles and there is one designed for every type of rider.

Sea-Doo S3 Hull

S3 stands for Stepped, Stable and Strong.  These hulls are made from lightweight material are ribbed and stepped.  This hull style creates a low-pressure zone to reduce drag for nimble handling.  The S3 hull cuts through the water and leans naturally when cornering. The hull is constructed of material that is up to 20% lighter than competitor hulls. The hull design is ideal for those who regularly take extended rides where comfort is important.

The hull characteristics are:

  • •Longer, deeper V hull
  • •Suspension option
  • •3-seater
  • •Tow sports capabilities

Benefits of the S3 hull:

  • •Cuts better through chop
  • •Bridges chop better
  • •More comfort when riding 2- or 3-up
  • •Stable with one, two, and three passengers
  • •Added features for comfort (GTX Platform)
  • •Added race-oriented features (RXT Platform)

Sea-Doo watercraft with S3 hulls are:

GTI Hull

Sea-Doo GTI Hull

Our GTI hulls are playful, yet stable and predictable and are ideal for riders looking for a stable and forgiving watercraft with versatility in both smooth and moderate water conditions. This hull planes quickly and rides higher on the water surface for a nimble ride. The GTI hull is a bit shorter but wider than the others in the line-up and with multiple passengers has proven to be the most stable in the category

The hull characteristics are:

  • •Flatter V, shorter, lighter hull
  • •Lower center of gravity
  • •3-seater
  • •Tow sports capabilities

Benefits of the GTI hulls are:

  • •More nimble ride
  • •Stable and forgiving
  • •Fuel efficient
  • •Option for added power (GTR 215)

Sea-Doo watercraft with GTI hulls are:

Sea-Doo T3 Hull

This revolutionary design provides aggressive lean-in turning characteristics and penetrates chop and rough water conditions better than any of its predecessors. T3 stands for Tight-Turning T-hull and uses an advanced dual surface hull design with a unique combination of soft and hard chines that engages the water with a suction force when leaning into a corner. These combined features provide enhanced lean angles which allow the rider to turn tighter and faster. The multiple stages of the T3 hull provide great stability at idle and low speeds, unmatched acceleration and a narrow high speed running surface which delivers a nimble and highly precise driving experience.

This hull design is ideal for enthusiasts looking for the ultimate race-oriented watercraft with maximum carving capability, sped and control in any water conditions.

The hull characteristics are:

  • •Combination of hard and soft chines
  • •T-shape
  • •Ergolock system
  • •2-seater

The benefits of the T3 hull are:

  • •Precise cornering and better lean-in
  • •Good rough water penetration
  • •Less upper body fatigue
  • •Better performance on a buoy course

The only Sea-Doo watercraft with the T3 hulls design is the award-winning RXP-X 260.

Whether you are a recreational rider who loves to spend hours on the water playing and towing friends and family, a speed junkie looking to take tight corners or a rider who craves comfort and endless hours cruising, Sea-Doo has a watercraft for you and your riding style

WELCOME TO THE WATER: Sea-Doo Dave!

Recently we came across this story about an avid fisherman who also is serving in the US Navy.  While he was away on deployment some of his friends got together and retrofitted his Sea-Doo and turned it into the perfect bass fishing personal watercraft.  We want to thank all of the friends, family and businesses that generously provided Dave with this awesome surprise and we would like to thank Dave for his dedication to the United States Navy.

Enjoy your time on the water Dave!

Here is the story as told by JetSkiBrian Lockwood, one of the masterminds behind this generous gift.

Several months ago my brother John and I decided we wanted to do something special for Dave W.

Dave is a young enlisted Navy man that is stationed here in Norfolk Virginia. He was on a 7 month deployment that turned into 9 months aboard the USS McFaul. His ship returned to port on Sunday.

While Stationed here Dave has shown a genuine enthusiasm for salt water fishing. He has participated in many seminars and local Angler Club meetings.

Before he deployed Dave dropped his Sea-Doo off at Martin’s Custom Structures in Gloucester Va. to have some custom pipe work done. My brother John and I surprised him by taking care of the expense while Albert Martin also agreed to store Dave’s ski under cover while he was out to sea.

I had told some friends and local businesses of my intentions to surprise Dave when he returned from deployment and they were all were eager to join in.

Some of the items given to Dave; two nights at a Hampton Inn, personal EPIRB, two custom rods w/ Shimano reels,Diawa reel, several shirts and hats, custom embroidered back pack, many fishing lures, framed pictures of USS McFaul and more.

These are the great people and businesses that donated items.
Aberdeen Barn Williamsburg
Appomattox River Outfitters
Atlantic Bait and Tackle
Bishops Fishing Supply
Grafton Fishing Supply
Hampton Inn Capital Landing
Martin’s Custom Structures
West Marine Hampton
York Embroidery
Rob Cowling
Julian Cox
Cynthia Lockwood
John Lockwood

Last Sunday as the McFaul finally pulled in to Norfolk Rob and I where there to great the ship and take several pictures.

We all gathered last night at Yorktown beach, and with the help of Dave’s girlfriend Melanie, we were able to totally catch Dave off guard and surprise him with all these things.

Thanks Dave for your service in the United States Navy!

Next year, Dave isgoing to be stationed in Connecticut. For the next several weeks he will be in the Chesapeake Bay after Striped Bass on his PWC.

Here are a couple pictures of Dave’s newly rigged Sea- Doo.

MUST HAVE OF THE WEEK: The RIGHT PFD for any Occasion

There is nothing more fun than spending a day or a weekend, out on the water with family and friends.  Hours of laughter, splashing and quality family time.  One of the most important safety items that a boater, or watercraft rider, can have on hand is the correct PFD.  There are numerous types of PFDs and not all PFDs are recommended for every situation.  The North America National Safe Boating Campaign “Wear It” campaign aims to educate boaters on the importance of wearing a PFD.

In 2009, the Coast Guard counted 4,730 accidents that involved 736 deaths, 3,358 injuries and approximately $36 million dollars of damage to property as a result of recreational boating accidents. Of those who drowned, 84 percent were not wearing life jackets.

“The statistics show that no matter where you are boating, being properly prepared and equipped and wearing a life jacket can help save many lives,” Virgil Chambers, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council said. “We want to prove that life jackets not only save lives, but that today’s life jackets are comfortable, stylish and easy to wear,” Boaters need to be and should be properly informed and educated about boating safety and most importantly, remember to ‘Wear It!’”

What type of PDF is appropriate for your boating activities?

IF YOU RIDE ON A PWC OR PARTICIPATE IN TOWED WATER SPORTS:  CHOOSE A FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET FOR ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE FREQUENT WATER ENTRY. RUGGED WITH MULTIPLE BUCKLES DESIGNED FOR HIGHER IMPACT ON WATER. INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS ARE NOT PERMITTED. MOST STATES REQUIRE PWC RIDERS AND “SKIERS” TO WEAR THEIR LIFE JACKET.

IF YOU CRUISE WITH FRIENDS : CHOOSE A MANUAL OR AUTO-MANUAL INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS FOR ADULTS ONLY. NOT APPROVED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 16, NON-SWIMMERS, PWCS, WHITE WATER PADDLING OR TOWED SPORTS. COMFORTABLE, COMPACT SIZE AND HIGH PERFORMANCE. FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES.

IF YOU BOAT WITH FAMILY: CHOOSE A FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES. DESIGNED FOR GENERAL BOATING ON CALM, INLAND WATER, NOT FOR ROUGH WATER. MUST FIT PROPERLY FOR SIZE AND WEIGHT.  COMFORTABLE, MANY STYLES AND SIZES AVAILABLE FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES. INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS ALSO A GOOD CHOICE.

IF YOU FISH: CHOOSE A MANUAL OR AUTO-MANUAL INFLATABLE LIFE JACKET FOR ADULTS ONLY. FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET FEATURES POCKETS AND STRAPS FOR SUPPLIES AND TACKLE.  CONSIDER DUAL PURPOSE FLOAT COAT FOR COLD WEATHER AND WATER.

IF YOU PADDLE: CHOOSE A MANUAL OR AUTO-MANUAL INFLATABLE LIFE JACKET FOR ADULTS ONLY. FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET DESIGNED WITH LARGE ARM OPENINGS FOR EASE OF MOVEMENT WHILE PADDLING.  APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AGES.

IF YOU HUNT: CHOOSE THIS MANUAL OR AUTO-MANUAL INFLATABLE LIFE JACKET FOR ADULTS ONLY.FLOTATION AID LIFE JACKET WITH CAMO, LARGE ENOUGH TO FIT OVER HEAVY CLOTHES. CONSIDER DUAL PURPOSE FLOAT COAT FOR COLD WEATHER AND WATER.
